It comes in waves, alone or with company, like sadness or defeat. But it comes, and when it does we must be ready to embrace it, turn it around and use it to our advantage. The state of disenchantment has numerous sources, all awaiting their turn to be tapped. Let’s say you debuted your latest and greatest treatment and people flocked to it in crowds. Hurrah! you say, only to have it later take a backseat to your more popular services. The source of disappointment, in this instance, is expectation. When we get our hopes up—even if for good reason—we may get hurt. Shall we then live a life without hope in an effort to avoid disappointment? Shall you strike down innovation at your skin care facility or spa, remain stale and just offer the same old therapies to bypass what you perceive to be failure? I think not. To find that special service you must take a risk, see what went wrong and do something different. Welcome disappointment to your place of work and when it arrives, kindly show it out the door. Learn from the visit, and move on. Disappointment also comes from a lack of achievement. We are constantly striving to accomplish a task, be it gaining accreditation, empowering a weakened family, learning a new skill or mending a broken heart. When we fail at achieving what we set out to do, disappointment once again knocks on our doors, sometimes even our windows, impatiently wanting to come in. At times we try, try, try harder and still cannot find a way to make our dreams come true. So shall we stop dreaming in order to prevent disappointment and defeat from traveling to our doorstep? No way! When you have done the very best, know that that is enough, no matter the outcome. You gave it your best, now try yet again—and move on. A sense of loss too brings with it disappointing sentiments. When you lose a friend, family member, loved one or even a client, dark days fill your otherwise bright treatment room, casting a shadow of doubt and gloom. So then, shall we turn true love and caring relationships away to keep disappointment from coming our way? Uh-uh! Live life passionately, and move on.July 2008 From the EditorYouth. The word is a loaded one, with images of great adventure, enthusiastic days and fun filled nights. Think great skin, defined muscles, high energy and few worries. Read: bliss! But youth, too, has its downfalls, namely inexperience. As our anti-aging issue materializes this month, we address how we can bring back the fountain of youth to our bodies and spirits by putting our hard earned wisdom to work. June 2008 From the EditorSummertime recreation, here we come! With people-packed beaches and cool oceans awaiting, who can wait to get outside? May 2008 From the EditorWith Father’s Day just around the corner and Mother’s Day upon us we celebrate both men and women this month. While women continue to make up the core of the skin care and spa clientele men are increasingly joining them. Like women, men are turning to spa treatments to stay young and look good. In response, we must be eager to offer individualized, male specific services to bring in the dads. But while expanding your client base don’t forget the foundation of your business: women. Tweak your menu and focus on providing services dedicated to pampering mothers all month long. April 2008 From the EditorThe skin care and spa field is witnessing a revolutionary evolution that involves everything from committed recycling and energy conservation to ecofriendly products and manufacturing processes. It’s the green movement, and it’s here to stay! Some industry professionals are also incorporating natural and organic formulations in their treatment protocols and are offering them for sale to a new and growing, environmentally conscious clientele. So what does all of this mean? It means that as an industry, we are going green! March 2008 From the EditorDuring the month of March we prepare welcome spring flowers, blossoming trees and a new growth of leaves throughout. As nature’s colors emerge from what may have once been frozen prairies or snow filled mountains, we cheer the springtime on. February 2008 From the EditorThe iris is February’s birth flower. Its deep hues and sword-shaped leaves that flirt with spring breezes hint at the month’s themes of love and passion. The iris flower represents faith, wisdom and hope, necessary characteristics for living fulfilling, productive lives. January 2008 From the EditorNew year, new beginnings, new challenges, new resolutions. This time of year offers relief, calm and clarity, as we give ourselves permission to forget the old, forgive the bad and start anew. December 2007 From the EditorThe end of year is upon us and with it, lots of food, family and fun, correct? Yes, well—maybe. While the holidays bring friends and relatives together to enjoy meaningful feasts and traditions, yearend responsibilities and culinary temptations can be daunting. But don’t let the season cheer you down just yet. There are ways to enjoy family gatherings and cocktail parties while making quality time for yourself. November 2007 From the EditorPride. The word’s meaning can have both negative and positive implications. Negative, as having too much pride can mean having a big ego that needs to be fed. Exhibiting that kind of pride can alienate a person from colleagues, friends and family, so we want to avoid that type of pride. October 2007 From the EditorAutumn, that marvelous period that bids farewell to summer and begins to welcome the winter season. A time when moonlit nights are longer as we ease into cooler weather and await the oncoming close of the year. September 2007 From the EditorWe in the skin care and spa industry are privileged to offer clients therapeutic treatments to beautify the body and quiet the mind. Yet with the responsibility of providing wellness to a vast clientele comes the challenge of providing wellness to all that surrounds us, meaning we must take the environment to heart. August 2007 From the EditorMaking difficult choices is an inevitable part of life that enables us to grow and evolve, sometimes painfully, oftentimes uncomfortably. Change usually requires the need to adapt to new circumstances, and brings the decision-making process into play. July 2007 From the EditorThis month let’s focus on nourishing our nonphysical selves, at the spa and home alike. June 2007 From the EditorAh, June! The sixth month out of 12, June serves as the halfway mark to our annual patterns that mean so much to so many. It is a thought-provoking and energetic, quite refined time to fathom. May 2007 From the EditorWhile leisure ought to be respected and not abused, it does have its place in our world. Leisure gives perspective to our tasks, marvel to our families, focus to our jobs. So look around and take some time to enjoy your surroundings—it’s a beautiful world out there! April 2007 From the EditorPerception is a funny thing. Take, for example, any two people—both may have attended the same meeting, seen the same movie or smelled the same essential oil, but they’ll perceive all three of these things very differently. March 2007 From the EditorThere are three kinds of people in this industry. Those who move forward, those who stand in place and those who take a step back—and we’ve all been all three types of people at one time or another. February 2007 From the EditorOn the surface, I’d have to say the one thing that makes us all unique is our skin. When you present yourself to someone, it’s one of the first things they see. January 2007 From the EditorWhat’s in store for us this year? Last year we saw the intensification of the medispa, the re-emergence of the men’s market among regular Joes, the push for peptides, the continuation of Botox’s strength, the introduction of several new fillers and the final approval of silicone breast implants, the layering of equipment and clinical skin care, in addition to the Jolie-Pitt affair, Cruise-Holmes wedding and the Spears-Federline breakup. December 2006 From the EditorIt’s precious, yet it’s wasted. We make it, but we don’t have a lot of it. There are special ones, awful ones, sad ones, happy ones and overall good ones. We can’t touch it, however, we can take it. What do you think it is? November 2006 From the EditorWhat’s happened to our excitement? While it may seem that we’re going nowhere fast, I offer you information to the contrary.October 2006 From the EditorOne of the hardest things I’ve ever had to learn is how to let go. It’s something that has recurred throughout my life both professionally and personally and it’s something that I’m sure many of you have struggled with before. September 2006 From the EditorIt’s frustrating when you’re not understood. What makes perfect sense to you may simply be gobbledygook to someone else. Think about your clients. Do they really know what transepidermal water loss is and why it’s so important to keep it to a minimum? What about something as simple as sensitive skin? Do they really understand how to treat it and its complications? I know with some of your clients you probably feel that you’re spinning your wheels when you talk to them, that no matter how you try to explain it, your client doesn’t seem to get it—like with sun protection. August 2006 From the EditorWe learn from those closest to us, they mentor us along the right paths, but it’s up to us to use the information they’ve given us. With their advice, we can look for imperfections and weakness points to avoid wasting time on things that distract us from our goals. And then we have to continue practicing until we have it right.
