From the Editor

By Denise R. Fuller

Change is inevitable. Many of my colleagues in the skin care and spa industry have experienced the downsizing of their businesses, relocation, budget cuts and staff layoffs. I have recently made a significant change in my own career. On December 5th, I took over the position as editor-in-chief at Les Nouvelles Esthétiques & Spa. Like anyone beginning a new job, I had many questions about the position, and I am still learning new skills every day. I am an esthetician first—not a journalist. My goal in this position is to create positive change in our industry. My passion pushes me to work harder. That being said, I would like to share a few things I have learned so far.
Let’s start with the name of the magazine. After reading LNE & Spa for all these years, I had no idea what the name meant! “Les” is the French word for “The,” “Nouvelle” means “Newest” and “Esthétiques” is French for “Esthetics.” Put it all together and you have “The Newest in Esthetics.” Les Nouvelles Esthétiques & Spa originated in Paris 50 years ago, and today it has an international network that spans the globe.
Sitting at the computer all day is quite challenging for someone whose previous experience was working as a hands-on therapist. I need to stand up and stretch my legs on a routine basis. Often I will call a colleague, which helps me to get perspective and refocus on the task at hand.
Practice what you preach. We constantly tell our clients to commit to facials and treatments for their well-being. But do we follow our own advice? We also need to take care of ourselves and our well-being. We cannot give to our clients if our own energy is depleted.
The knowledge that my work is helping the livelihood of estheticians and spa owners gives me an incredible feeling, and keeps me motivated to find top quality articles and features just for you!
Change brings with it the opportunity to emerge stronger, and make a deeper commitment to oneself to create the career and life that upholds your highest potential. These past six months have been challenging, but every new day is a fresh opportunity to learn, grow and become a better esthetician and stronger editor. My new position has given me a chance to learn even more about skin and the spa industry. I hope you are enjoying the changes in LNE & Spa. I look forward to sharing more articles and features on topics that help keep your businesses and careers on the cutting edge!
